Gender Responsive Urban Planning: Lessons Learned from Eva Kail’s Work in Vienna

Eva Kail, renowned urban planner and founder of Frauenbüro - The Women’s Office in Vienna, highlights how cities—historically shaped by male-dominated perspectives—can become more inclusive through gender-responsive urban planning. Her approach addresses the diverse needs of urban residents, focusing on accessibility, mobility, and safety while tackling challenges like climate change.

Vienna has emerged as a global leader in gender-sensitive urban planning under Kail’s guidance. Projects such as safer crossings, broader sidewalks, and gender-responsive park designs demonstrate how inclusive planning transforms public spaces. Participatory initiatives in districts like Mariahilf have shown that involving diverse voices leads to more equitable and user-friendly environments, benefiting everyone in the community.

By addressing the needs of vulnerable groups and fostering inclusive infrastructure, Vienna’s approach sets a compelling example for the future of urban planning worldwide.

This presentation was held during the event TUTTA MIA LA CITTÀ - Urban Planning for More Inclusive and Sustainable Public Spaces on 25 November 2024 at Cinema Fulgor in Rimini. The event has been organized by Rimini Municipality in collaboration with Re-Value Project partners and many others.
