The first completed section of Rimini's renowned Parco del Mare has been nominated for the prestigious European Prize for Urban Public Space. This award, presented by the Barcelona Centre of Contemporary Culture (CCCB), celebrates innovative urban planning projects that enhance public spaces across Europe.

The Parco del Mare is a key feature of the city’s urban regeneration strategy, which aims to revitalise Rimini's 15-kilometre coastline, and is the focus of the municipality’s work in Re-Value. The park’s newest section, stretching from Piazzale Gondar to Via Siracusa, was opened to the public in July 2024. The park features public fitness facilities, bike paths, pedestrian zones, and inclusive urban design elements that cater to both locals and tourists. The park also incorporates climate-adaptive features, including a constructed dune network and stormwater management systems to mitigate sea-level rise and protect water quality and Rimini’s famed beaches.

In its nomination, the CCCB praised the project, noting: “The park transforms the previously unstructured, fragmented seafront into an urban park, seamlessly integrated with its surroundings. Along its 6 km length, it recognizes and embraces the city’s exuberance, providing a new identity and a green urban space for tourists and locals alike. This park plays a crucial role in reducing the impact of climate change while mitigating the intense touristic impact on the urban character and quality of the area.”

The winner will be announced at the award ceremony on October 29 in Barcelona. More information about the nominees and the award can be found on the CCCB's website
