Urban Planning and Design Approaches Portfolio (Initial Version)
The Re-Value project brings together nine European waterfront cities to align climate neutrality with urban quality by reimagining their waterfronts. Guided by the New European Bauhaus-inspired Impact Model, the cities engage in three innovation cycles—story-building, data-driven decision-making, and implementation partnerships—to create a compelling and inclusive climate transition.
Four Leading Cities (Ålesund, Bruges, Burgas, and Rimini) are spearheading integrated urban planning and design approaches through Waterfront Pilots, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Five Replication Cities (Cascais, Constanța, İzmir, Písek, and Rijeka) are learning from these leaders and developing their own localized strategies, contributing to a Community of Practice that fosters shared learning and innovation.
The project builds on existing sustainable urban planning efforts, compiling insights into a living Portfolio of urban planning and design approaches. This Portfolio, organized around key principles, showcases tools, methods, and case studies to inspire cities across Europe in their pursuit of the European Green Deal’s climate-neutrality goals. It evolves through the Re-Value journey, with a final version due in 2026, promoting collaborative learning and the integration of best practices.
