Informed Cities Newsletter - From mass tourism to más sustainable tourism
This summer, anti-tourism protests erupted across European cities, grabbing headlines and raising critical questions about the real impact of tourism on local communities. What was once hailed as an economic lifeline is now being scrutinized for its darker side — driving up housing costs, displacing essential businesses, and contributing to environmental degradation. Many residents feel excluded from their own cities as the balance tilts in favour of visitors.
The urgent challenge we now face is clear: how can we use inclusive urban planning and design approaches to re-value tourism so that it benefits both locals and visitors, without compromising the character and sustainability of the cities themselves? In this edition of the Informed Cities Newsletter, we spotlight innovative strategies, resources, and success stories from Re-Value Cities and NZC to show how local governments are trying to create vibrant, sustainable cities—places where tourism can exist in harmony with the people who call them home.
