Guidance Framework for the Food Hub Redevelopment in Bruges
This policy note sets out the guiding principles for the future redevelopment of the Food Hub in Bruges, located between Krakeleweg, Sint-Pietersgroenestraat, the F31 cycling highway (Spinnerijpad), and Sint-Pieterskaai (R30).
The Food Hub is envisioned as a mixed urban district combining urban agriculture, food-related businesses, and logistics in short food supply chains. Its proximity to the port offers opportunities for sustainable distribution and circular food systems, while also requiring careful consideration of environmental impacts such as noise and air quality.
The document outlines the legal and planning framework, including applicable regional spatial plans (GRUP), ongoing urban transformation processes for the Kaaidistrict, and the city’s broader climate and mobility strategies. It stresses the importance of integrated planning across property boundaries and alignment with future zoning and infrastructure developments.
A key feature of the guidance is the promotion of a co-creative masterplanning process through a “charrette” approach. This brings together developers, architects, and public authorities to develop a shared vision for the entire block. The process is supported by “guidelines” defined by the City of Bruges and further refined through dialogue and stakeholder engagement.
The note also defines a series of core development principles (“wegwijzers”) covering spatial quality, open space, mobility, urban logistics, food production, housing integration, climate resilience, and sustainability.
